Aspects économiques et techniques de la perliculture en Polynésie Française. Contribution à l'étude de l'alimentation de l'huître perlière Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer
Hautefeuille, Fanny.
Cultured black pearls are now the tirst export value of French Polynesia. This fast growing activity encourage the retum of the islanders to their native islands and the revival of the economy of the archipelagoes. However, the importance of the development induced sorne technical and economical problems. New reglementations are needed to organize the market and stabilize the black pearl price, the quotation of which is falling since 1990. After the important mortalities which occured in 1985-1 986, the mother of pearl general investigation program was set up. Il aims at the study of the biology and the ecology of the mother of pearl Pinclada margaritifera. The study of the nutrition of this oyster is part of this program and will contribute to the...

Developmental aspects of biomineralisation in the Polynesian pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingii ArchiMer
Che, Lm; Golubic, S; Le Campion-alsumard, T; Payri, C.
The shell biomineralisation with special reference to the nacreous region is observed during the development of the Polynesian pearl oyster. Ultrastructural changes were studied and timed for the first time from planktonic larval shells to two-year-old adult shells. During the first two weeks following fertilization, the prodissoconch-I shell structure is undifferentiated and uniformly granular. The prodissoconch-II stage which develops during the next two weeks acquires a columnar organization. Metamorphosis is characterized by the formation of the dissoconch shell with all the elements of an adult shell and marks the onset of the development of the nacre. Nucleation starts within an organic matrix from point sources forming 'crystal germs' which expand...

Thielley, Maryse.
The population of Pinctada margaritifera and Pinctada maculata lay eggs throughout the year. Temperature variations induce huge but asynchronous laying. Preferential periods of gonad maturity correspond to the season changings in both species. However. some differences between the two specics are noticed. Both species are protandric hermaphrodites. Female condition is unstable: a reversion to the male condition may be observed and is probably linked with stress. The average size for the first sexual maturation as weil as for sexual conversion are specified in P. margaritifera. The breeding conditions induce modifications in some reproductive cycle processes (maturation, sex-ratio). Some conditions suitable for reproduction may become unfavorable to...

Gametogenic cycle and reproductive effort of the tropical blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera (Bivalvia : Pteriidae), cultivated in Takapoto atoll (French Polynesia) ArchiMer
Pouvreau, Stephane; Gangnery, Aline; Tiapari, Jerome; Lagarde, Franck; Garnier, Matthieu; Bodoy, Alain.
The gametogenic cycle and the reproductive effort of the blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, cultivated in Takapoto lagoon were studied for a 1-year period (March 1997-April 1998) by bimonthly observations of gonadal sections, dry tissue weights and gonadal index in a population of pearl oyster composed of three age-groups. pearl oysters attained sexual maturity in the end of their first year (height approximate to 40 mm), implying that P. margaritifera is a late-maturing species in comparison with other Pteriidae. This species was also confirmed to be a marked protandrous successive hermaphrodite in culture, with 100 % of males at first maturity and 75 % in older pearl oyster (height > 120 mm). The general pattern of gametogenic activity,...

Gestion des ressources génétiques de l'huître perlière Pinctada margaritifera de Polynésie française : caractérisation génétique des populations et optimisation du recrutement pour l'exploitation perlière ArchiMer
Arnaud, Sophie; Goyard, Emmanuel; Prou, Jean; Vonau, Vincent; Bonhomme, Francois; Boudry, Pierre.
Exploitation of the pearl oyster Pinetada margaritifera, which has developed in French Polynesia over the last twenty years, is based mainly on the collection of natural spat. Recruitment is highly variable in space and time and so spat is very often transferred by the farmers between atolls or even between archipelagos. In previous studies, anonymous nuclear markers demonstrated that This development has coincided with a genetic homogenisation of the wild stocks since the 1980s. This suggests a high level of reproductive success on farms, which is likely to be due to the high density of animaIs when compared to the density in the wild. We used the same markers to show that the level of genetic variability observed on farms is not significantly different...

Growth of the black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, at nine culture sites of French Polynesia: synthesis of several sampling designs conducted between 1994 and 1999 ArchiMer
Pouvreau, Stephane; Prasil, Vincent.
Between 1994 and 1999, several sampling designs were used to measure the growth of the black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingi at different sites in French Polynesia. Using a common statistical method, growth data were analysed for nine sites and showed significant geographic variability. Parameters of the Von Bertalanffy model, fitted on the nine data sets, ranged from 147 to 186.5 mm for the H-infinity parameter and from 0.42 to 0.58 year(-1) for the k parameter. The phi parameter (combination of H-infinity and k) provided a ranking classification of growth in these nine sites: growth was low in closed atoll lagoons, such as Takapoto, whereas the island lagoons and ocean habitat supported a very promising shell growth. Calculated on...

Programme général de recherche sur la nacre. Écophysiologie de l'huître perlière, approche des relations entre la croissance de l'huître Pinctada margaritifera et le milieu dans le lagon de Takapoto ArchiMer
Buestel, Dominique; Pouvreau, Stephane; Tiapari, Jerome; Bougrier, Serge; Chabirand, Jean-michel; Geairon, Philippe; Fougerouse, A.
A study of pearl oysters Pinctada margaritifera growth and mortality was done on a monthly basis between June 1990 and September 1991 in Takapoto atoll (Tuamotu archipelago). Meanwhile, sampling parameters representative of bivalves food showed a remarquable spatial stability whithin the lagoon. The amplitude of temporal variability varied in the order of some days. Carrying capacity appears low : energetic content of particulate material in waters is about 2 joules/liter, ten times lower than in temperate areas. On the opposite, seasonal effect is reduced and particulate food is always available. Oysters rearing conditions were appropriate during the studied period with a low mortality rate and a regular growth in size (from 97 mm to 136 mm). Pearls...

Progress in pathological characterization of Syndrome 85 in the black-lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer
Comps, Marie-annick; Herbaut, Christian; Fougerouse, Angélique; Laporte, Florent.
A programme of zoosanitary survey of the populations of black-lip pearl oyster (P. margaritifera) has been developed in French Polynesia during 1996 and 1997. Based on histological and ultrastructural examinations, the study of pearl oysters sampled in several pearl farms from the Society Islands, Tuamotu Atolls and Gambler Archipelago, has been particularly turned to enzootic pathological problems. Particular attention has been given to the shell disease and to the necrosis of the adductor muscle, symptoms that had accompanied the mass mortality in 1985.Virus-like particles, about 40 nm in diameter, were detected in membrane bound vesicles from the necrosized muscle tissue. A new Rickettsia-like organism found in epithelial cells of the digestive tubules...
